>> reporter: yesterday afternoon police in san jose shot and killed a man after a high speed chase on highway 85. that suspect was also pronounced dead at the scene. in san francisco early saturday morning another vehicle pursuit ended near candle stick park. late thursday night in sonoma county a sheriff's deputy shot and killed a kidnapping suspect after he led them on a chase with a victim in the car. a fifth officer-involved shooting happened in union city last night. officers shot and killed an armed man that they say pointed a gun at them after a traffic stop. all of these shootings are subject to internal review and the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave. it was a wild high speed chase on city streets that led officers to fire on a suspect in san jose. that chase began around 2:30 in

the afternoon. despite speeds of up to 100 miles per hour at times no officer or by stander was hurt. the spokesman says the suspect's identity may be released tomorrow. today the triathlon was grueling as ever and thousands of people finished successfully one athlete died. race officials say they believe the 46-year-old man from austin, texas suffered a massive cardiac event during the first portion of the triathlon. we talked with the race organizer who says in the year history of the triathlon this is the first time someone died. >> the gentleman received assist ance right when it happened. i mean, that's all you can ask for if you're an athlete. if you're an athlete and something happens, you want to get assistance as soon as something happens to you in the water or on the bike or on the run. and he got that assistance

today. unfortunately, any type of assistance we could give him, it just wasn't enough. >> the triathletes hit chillier waters this year because the race was moved from its traditional spot in june to february because of the america's cup. rather march. the race organizer says that isn't likely a factor. participants from the age of 7 to 70 years old finished the race. it is one of the world mfs's most infamous. a fire started at independence high school. it started outside a building in the bvilla which houses one of the principals of the school. firefighters say there could have been more damage. >> the thing that helped us out

is the sprinkle are system. >> firefighters worked about 40 minutes. investigators say this is not the first tliem has been a fire at that school. another fire investigation at a seniorer housing complex. santa clara county fire officials say the fire was contained to the 12th floor of the building. some people did lose their homes and now the red cross is working to assist them. dozens of people worried about the spread of a toxic plume showed up for a community meeting today. for years the area has been an e.p.a. superfund site. tons of ground water and soil contaminated has been removed.

t.s.e. is a cancer causing solvent used decades ago. our investigative unit uncovered last yeart that the plume has spread under more homes and buildings and is releasing toxic fumes. that is why residents and watch dog agencies are worried. >> the concern that we're asking about, and we don't really know yet, to what degree were the people who worked in the bigs, particularly the pregnant women, were informed. google did share some information with them. and i don't know to what degree they fully explained the implications of that information. >> our investigation discovered that there was a higher than expected incidence of cancer among those living over the plume which includes google office buildings. today they shared test findings and answered residents' questions. residents are worried about a new gun shop and are pressuring the town council to

approve an emergency moratorium tomorrow. templar sports opened the doors in late december. in the wake of the shooting in newtown, connecticut many protested how this could happen without much public debate. in the end the town council decided to vote on emergency moratorium on new firearm dealers. if it is improved tomorrow the moratorium would apply retroactively. republicans here in california are turning to a familiar face to lead their party. former state lawmaker has been elected as party chairman by more than 1,000 delegates at the spring convention in sacramento. much of the attention today was around the vote for the party's number two job.

thousands of people gathered in selma, alabama to honor and remember those who were part of the bloody march there 40 years ago. congressman john lewis joined vice president joe biden and other elected and civil rights leaders for the annual bridge crossing jubilee. as part of the weekend of memorial the chief of police in montgomery publicly apologized for his department's failures during the violence. >> it needed to be spoken because we have to live with the truth and it is the truth. >> this is the first chief in america to issue an apology. and it means a great deal. >> the march prompted congress

feedback. >> people come to us under the age of 25. most around 22 or 23. they are saying i want to do this but i don't know what to do next. i need some guidance. >> reporter: it was coming from someone their own age or younger didn't seem to matter. >> never once did somebody say i have more experience than you. you don't know what you are talking about because what matters is feeding people. what matters is clothing people and providing housing or ways to get involved with some of the education. it is about what is getting done. >> reporter: the relay foundation has worked with dozens of organizations to help get them to whatever the next goal may be. >> little steps. >> reporter: bruce is about to embark on a 30 country world tour on behalf of the relay foundation. he is hoping for a grand exchange of ideas because bruce is quick to point out he doesn't have all the answers. he is just sure that no isn't

one of them. >> i don't know the right answer right now but i'm going to do something. it just has to happen. because if i sit and wait nothing will happen. >> nice kid. it has been a very long time since we needed the umbrella. i think it might be under the seat of my car. >> you will have to find the umbrella, coat, heavy jackets. we are definitely talking about cold air making its way back into the bay area. you can see this is emeryville. there is the thin layer of fog that has been blanketing san francisco all day long. beautiful sunset as the sun is going down now. you can see from our doppler radar we are not looking at rain right now. the showers that moved through earlier light misty showers. temperatures are cool and that is the cool air that we are waiting for that will continue

to cool us. 50 in san francisco. 53 in san jose. this wintery blast that is headed our way is going to drop temperatures back into the 50s. places in the 70s you are getting back into the upper 50s come thursday. even if you are in the 60s today mid 50s come thursday. it will be a gradual decline. here is our culprit, this upper level low spinning over the gulf of alaska. it has lots of moisture. this storm system is going to produce the most rain that we have seen in 2013 across the bay area producing about a half an inch and three quarters of an inch in some locations. the cold air associated with it will drive temperatures back into the 40s and 50s. if you have been suffering from allergies those allerergens will come down as we head towards the upcoming week. monday will be a dry day. tuesday you will notice showers first in the north bay and into

the peninsula. right around rush hour tuesday evening the showers will begin. they will be with us tuesday night through wednesday with intervals of showers and even embedded thunderstorms. and then we dry out as we head towards thursday. this is what our computer model is putting an estimate on. maybe about a half an inch in the south bay. you get to the east bay. even up into the north bay we will see the most amount of rain. this is going to be the most we have seen all year long. we are in an abnormal drought at least determined by the climate prediction center. 68 in santa rose aa tomorrow. temperatures very similar today to what we are going to see tomorrow. tuesday when we introduce the showers and thunderstorms. rain will be with us through wednesday and thursday. the good news there is always good news. temperatures will start to pop back up to near 70 degrees.

>> reporter: as if the scenic back drop isn't amazing enough wait until you meet some participants from today's 33rd annual escape from alcatraz. >> there has to be nervous anticipation about taking this on, right? >> right. i'm probably one of the youngest. i'm glad i'm not one of the oldest. but it's going to be a challenge. >> reporter: the palo alto native is not only competing for himself but to raise funds. >> blood cancer is very common in my family. we are going to raise money for people like my grandfather and people affected by it all around the world. it is pretty dominant and seemed like a great cause. >> reporter: on the other extreme of experience is eric. he has participated in each of the last 25 escapes. >> for me it's the challenge.

it's the escape. it represents to me a transition in my life. when i got into the coast guard i was 250 pounds. i lost 80 pounds through triathlons and exercising almost every day for quite a long time. >> reporter: if all of that is not enough here is willy stewart who lost his left arm as a teenager while working atop the water gate building in the nation's capitol. >> it was just an accident. and then i picked up my hand because it was sitting next to me and ran to george washington hospital in washington, d.c. >> losing his limb was a devastating yet pivotal time. >> i came out of my funk ever since i lost my arm i wanted to do things i couldn't believe i could do. as of today i can do that. i'm not going to let that stand in my way.

i would rather fail trying than not try. >> reporter: in more than 30 years as a maximum security federal prison legend has it nobody swam 1 1/2 miles from the island here to the shore and successfully escaped alcatraz. today 2,000 triathletes can say they accomplished just that. thank you. very impressive. there were several motivated and determined athletes. there was a 46-year-old man from austin, texas, who died during the swim portion of the triathlon this morning. doctors believe the man suffered a heart attack. our condolences go out to the family. we will have much more sports coming up later tonight. >> thank you very much. we thank you for choosing nbc bay area 6. we will be back with you here
